For those that don’t know, a Deepfake is a video in which the subject’s face or body is altered to look like that of another. By running enough iterations and training the model adequately, it can produce some staggeringly realistic results. While it is easy to see the negative potential of such technology, there’s also room for a ton of great things like this The Division 2 Deepfake.

MagierMo shares a short, 11 second clip of his character as Chuck Norris. Although it may look like it at first, this isn’t just a face swap, as Norris’ face moves around with the character with surprising detail. It does look out of place amidst the rest of the game’s graphics, but that’s hardly the point. When asked how it was accomplished, MagierMo explains that they used DeepFaceLab, which they describe as “a bunch of Python scripts that you execute one after the other.”
According to MagierMo, they ran around 100,000 iterations before filming the video, but most tutorials recommend running 300,000 iterations or more. This process took them 10 hours to complete and still wasn’t enough to get the full 40 second clip looking sharp. In response to the video, some fans inquire about the process while others do the sensible thing and make a ton of Chuck Norris jokes. There was even a response from the developer, claiming “that’s one agent that the Hunters would not want to hunt…”
The jokes range from classics like how the Boogeyman is afraid of Chuck Norris to The Division specific jokes like how the Dollar Flu caught Chuck Norris and died. If Chuck Norris were in fact playable in The Division 2, it would likely be a very different game. Given how difficult it was to accomplish this, it’s clear that Deepfake technology still has a long way to go before it is easily accessible.
The Division 2 is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
