She pursues the two princes through one of the castle’s secret passageways before stumbling upon the Dragon Prince’s egg. Upon learning that the egg wasn’t destroyed as she once thought, she decides to join Callum and Ezran on their journey to return the dragon to its mother. Their ventures are wrought with danger, but luckily, Callum is a practicing mage. The Dragon Prince takes place in a world of magic and wonder, but some spells featured in the series are completely impractical.

5 Aspiro

The Aspiro spell has saved Callum from many dangerous situations, but it is only able to do so much. Seeing as it’s the first spell he learns on his quest to become a mage, it makes sense that it somewhat lacks in terms of power, but surely Callum would benefit from studying a few different forms of magic. When cast, Aspiro allows the spell weaver to transform their breath into a powerful gust of wind. It is especially useful when used to scatter enemies or to transport an item to a different location, but the requirements for casting it render it a poor form of magic to rely on for achieving these tasks.

Aspiro can only be cast during a storm or in the presence of a strong breeze, a feature that diminishes its effectiveness in combat. If Callum were to be attacked on a calm and windless day, the result would see Aspiro failing him. It is certainly a handy spell to store in one’s arsenal, but a slight weather change will render it completely useless. Most humans are incapable of casting Aspiro, but possessing a Primal Stone will briefly bless the possessor with the ability. Even then, it requires slightly too much to be considered a viable form of offensive magic.

4 Fulminis

In an attempt to broaden his knowledge of magic, Callum tries to cast Fulminis, a powerful form of sky magic that permits the wielder the opportunity to harness the power of electricity. He is aware of the rune that needs to be drawn to cast Fulminis, but he has no memory of the incantation required to unleash its full power.

He quickly realizes the error of his ways after drawing the rune and summoning the spell for the first time. Engulfed by lightning, he pleads with Rayla to help him finish the spell, but she has no idea how to achieve this. Though the rune manages to project bolts of lightning from Callum’s hands, the spell will not end without the correct incantation, forcing Callum to continually shoot electricity from his fingers until he lets go of the Primal Stone. It can be assumed that most Sky spells require an incantation to be successfully cast, but Fulminis is the most impractical one seen so far.

3 The Deer Lifeblood Spell

After being severely injured by a dragon he sought to slay, Soren finds that he is unable to move his arms or legs. Claudia runs to his side and attempts to remedy his paralysis with dark magic, but all of her attempts fail. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, she commands her soldiers to help her get Soren to a hospital with haste.

Claudia waits impatiently to hear news on Soren’s wellbeing, but what she hears crushes her. The doctor informs her that Soren will never walk again. Though she accepts this new reality, seeing Soren Lay motionless on his hospital bed spurs her into action and leads her to scavenge a nearby forest to find a way to cure him. Ezran attempts to assist her in finding some fruit but unknowingly leads Claudia to find a herd of deer. When he leaves, Claudia apologizes to one of the deer and explains that she needs the creature to heal Soren. As a wielder of dark magic, it can be assumed that she extracted the creature’s life essence off-screen. Curing paralysis is an impressive feat, but requiring a live deer to do so renders it an exceptionally difficult spell to cast.

2 Manus, Pluma, Volantus

Callum breathes a sigh of relief upon reaching the summit of the Dragon Queen’s lair. His mission to reunite Zym with his mother has been a success, but sadly, he does not get time to celebrate. Viren has amassed an army to regain possession of the Dragon Prince, so Callum and his friends must act quickly to ensure the small dragon’s safety. In an attempt to improve their chances, Callum asks Ibis, a Sky mage, to teach him as much as he can about magic before their enemies arrive.

Ibis informs Callum of a spell that can transform the caster’s arms into giant wings. Though he does not directly teach him this spell, Callum memorizes the runes and incantations necessary to cast it and begins the laborious process of trying to learn it. Unlike the other Sky spells he has learned thus far, the Manus, Pluma, Volantus spell requires its runes to be painted onto the caster’s arms. If drawn successfully, Callum will gain the ability to fly, but it is hard to deny how ridiculously longwinded the process of casting it is.

1 The Fertility Spell

Prior to the events of The Dragon Prince, King Harrow, Callum and Ezran’s father, was faced with a difficult decision. Poverty had plagued the land and destroyed his kingdom’s food supply. Everyone who resided in Kotalis was starving, but Viren approached the king with a questionable solution. According to him, using the heart of a titan for a Fertility Spell would restore the land to what it was before the plague.

With no other options, King Harrow sets off to Xadia to defeat the mythological titan and claim its heart. He defeats the beast at the cost of many lives but manages to save thousands by extracting the power resting inside it. Though the Fertility Spell has the power to revive a planet, it can only be used if the caster possesses the appropriate means. Titan hearts are finite resources and incredibly challenging to obtain. If a second plague ever strikes Kotalis, there may not be a heart available to repeat the spell, making it an extremely unrealistic spell to rely on when attempting to save a kingdom.

The Dragon Prince Season 4 is scheduled for release in November 2022.
