Some games hold the record of being stuck in development hell for many years or have at the very least a troubled history, like Beyond Good and Evil 2, while others are simply not revealed for many years, leaving fans wanting. An example comes from GTA 6, which was supposedly being announced this year or sometime soon, considering that eight years have now passed between GTA 5 and now. The announcement didn’t happen, and there is no official information about GTA 6 being in development in the first place, so players expecting it to come very soon were disappointed that Rockstar Games revealed Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition as this December’s release, instead. Likewise, 2021 has brought a few more odd records regarding game development and timelines.

The Elder Scrolls 6 and Bethesda’s Silence

Every year is full of weird records and facts about video games, and one of the most discussed titles remains The Elder Scrolls 6. The game was first announced at E3 2018 with a very short teaser trailer, that suggested the main setting of the game to hardcore fans, but still didn’t do much else than narrow it down to a few alternatives. Shockingly, ever since that one teaser trailer, Bethesda hasn’t divulged much about The Elder Scrolls 6 to date, with the only exception of Phil Spencer stating that the game will be released after Fable 4. This is understandable due to the team being focused on Starfield, though.

As such, because the video was first shown on June 11 of 2018, fans of The Elder Scrolls series have been waiting to know more about the sixth installment for over 1,200 days. What’s worse is that, at this point, it’s very likely that news won’t drop prior to the full release of Starfield in November of next year, with The Elder Scrolls 6 possibly coming either in 2023 or 2024. This year holds the record of no updates regarding the game’s development or content for over three years, but it’s very likely that this trend will continue for at least another full year.

With all the hype surrounding Bethesda’s sequel to Skyrim, it’s also worth noting that The Elder Scrolls 5 remains one of the most played games of the past decade, and it is also turning ten years old in ten days. And yet, Skyrim’s success does not automatically mean that The Elder Scrolls 6 will follow in its footsteps, but getting a full trailer for it would help.

Destiny 2’s Lack of New PvP Maps

Destiny 2 holds another weird record in 2021, which is tied to how long it has been since the game introduced a new PvP map to its playlist activities. As of today, it’s been two years and one month since the last few were added, much to the dismay of the competitive community, which was also deprived of many maps with the release of the last annual expansion, Beyond Light. Last November, in fact, Bungie released the yearly expansion and removed a lot of locations from Destiny 2’s available ones as part of the Destiny Content Vault plan to reduce the game’s file size and loading times as it continues to grow.

Eleven Crucible maps were removed as part of this course, and PvP players have been struggling to feel engaged with the game’s current content due to novelty draught for those who are not as interested in the story or other game modes. The record is, fortunately, coming to an end with The Witch Queen and Season 16, even though players believe it’s too little too late due to the two maps returning being ones that were previously vaulted. For the first truly new Crucible map, Destiny 2 players will have to wait up until Season 17, which tentatively starts sometime in May or June of next year.

This will take the record even further, and those on the lookout for a new Destiny 2 PvP map will have waited for around 1,000 days when it finally comes. Right now, that number is sitting at 763 days - which is when the Shadowkeep expansion was released. Furthermore, Destiny 2’s current season, called Season of the Lost, holds the record for the longest season in the history of the game, and that’s because of the impact the pandemic had on the development of The Witch Queen and its delayed launch.

Roblox’s Outage and Positive Records

Roblox holds a very different weird record for this year than those of The Elder Scrolls 6 and Destiny 2, and that’s because the famous game creation system was brought down on October 28 at 4 PM PDT, only for its servers going back online after three days. It’s quite uncommon for outages to last over a few hours for very large games, but being offline for three days is a much more severe case than average. Everything related to Roblox was down the entire time, with even the official website being inaccessible for as long as the maintenance took to sort things out.

What’s more baffling is that players were pretty much left in the dark the whole time, and there was little to no communication from the developers at Roblox Corporation. The only real updates about the situation came in the form of a few messages on social media and an apology post on the official Roblox blog after the issue was solved.

Still, there have also been refreshing records this 2021, and it’s important to note a few. One is that, despite several glitches that have affected some players’ experience, New World is still peaking daily at around 400,000 active players at once, making it one of the most played games on Steam. Another record is held by the Ratchet and Clank series, which finally got a sequel in the form of Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart this year after 8 years since the last installment, and it rebooted the series on next-gen consoles with a very successful launch. Overall, 2021 was a bit weird of a year, but it also reserved a few happy surprises.

The Elder Scrolls 6 is in development.
