The cast also had a little time to talk about what was in store for season 5. When asked, showrunner Naren Shankar remarked that, in the writer’s room, the theme of season five was “you reap what you sow.” It’s an ominous phrase, with dark implications for the show’s characters as disaster seems to loom on the horizon by the end of season 4. It was also discussed how some character’s backstories, particularly Naomi and Amos Burton, will really be dug into with season 5.

Not much was given away in the form of direct spoilers, although a few specific plot beats seem to be on the table after the trailer. The OPA is bringing the Belters together as one people for direct conflict with the Inners, a fight the forces of Earth and Mars (now in shambles) might not win. Frankie Adams, who plays Bobbie Draper, discussed how her character is beginning to focus more closely on the good of her immediate company over the good of the entire solar system at large. In response, Cara Gee, who plays the feisty Belter Drummer, responded “She may come to regret that, I don’t know.”
It seems like season 5 is shaping up to be the biggest and most intense season of The Expanse yet, with higher stakes than ever before. Panel host Dominique Tipper even went so far as to claim season 5 will be the Avengers: Infinity War of The Expanse, which, most fans will remember, didn’t end so cheerfully. For those interested in getting some more insight into the show and season 5, the full Q&A is available on Youtube in association with New York Comic Con.
